Silhouetted against an orange orb, the outstretched hand with a single eye at its center alludes to the power of palm reading, the divination of one's character or future, which is an important component of African folklore and magic conjuring known as hoodoo, or rootwork. By exploring the spiritual aspects of her African American Heritage, Renée Stout also engages with the discomfort some people have about folk practices.
